Musical Formation

Gerard Isaac Wong’s musical formation has developed through formal instruction, private study, and masterclasses in piano, organ, and church music. His training has encompassed foundational organ technique, service playing, hymn improvisation, classical repertoire, and advanced organ studies, alongside piano training that led to his ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Performance qualification with Distinction. He continues to pursue organ development and ARCO preparation through ongoing study with American organist Thomas Mellan.

Online Lessons with Thomas Mellan

Gerard continues to develop his organ technique and repertoire through online study with Thomas Mellan. His lessons focus on pedal technique, manual and pedal coordination, registration, articulation, interpretation, sacred repertoire, and preparation for advanced organ performance.

Organ Masterclass

Phoon Yu at Methodist School of Music, Singapore
July - August 2022

Gerard participated in private and group masterclass sessions with Phoon Yu, focusing on the interpretation of J. S. Bach’s Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639. The sessions explored phrasing, articulation, registration, musical structure, and interpretative approaches to Bach’s organ repertoire.

Gerard’s studies with Koh Jia Hwei supported his development in piano and organ technique, classical repertoire, and examination preparation. His piano studies contributed to his ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Performance with Distinction, while his organ studies focused on manual and pedal coordination, liturgical repertoire, and concert performance.

Organ Studies and Hymn Improvisation

Under Isaac Lee, Gerard developed a practical foundation in church organ playing and hymn-based musicianship, including service playing, hymn improvisation, reharmonisation, hymn arrangement, and organ repertoire development.
